This man was performing Buddist chants and prayers in Wicklow street Dublin. The basket in front of him was for people to drop change into, with a note that said he is from Japan.
Although he's meditating in prayer, the white square is like a cartoon thought bubble showing us what he's really thinking about.

Nikon EM, Fuji Neopan 400 Black and white film. 50mm lens, f 5.6.

The original of this was a negscan, this udate was a flat bed scan of a darkroom fiber paper print.

Daily DeviationThinking of Chanel by ~Treamus. There is no shortage of amazing street photography in Seamus's gallery. One of the best photographers in Ireland i say! The simplicity of his message here, and fantastic tones make this shot stand out (Suggested by ~John-Duncan and Featured by `Obsidian-Fox)

My latest piece

I invite you to take a look at my gallery
Brilliant... A beautifully composed and well thought out piece... To see a shot like that spontaneously shows great insight

Neat. The point could have been made a bit clearer without text merely by moving in closer and isolating the subject with space. The basic composition of this could be held.
Good point, I did anouther print of this in the darkroom the other day, where I croped out the writing and it's far better. More humour in the image. Many thanks for stopping by and the critique.
No problem, mate. Hope it helps.

Happy shooting.
Before I read your description I thought
"That the image reminds me of the underground walk way near Ginza."

After I read it I realized that the patterns of the fabric of his things might have made me think that. But he doesn't seem Japanese to me. At all.

I was thinking of a particular very long walk way.

There are few subway stops and department stores and some buildings that are are linked underground

There's marble, and large posters for expensive material "brands" (in Japanese "burando" [brand] means Gucci, Rolex, Channel, etc.), marble and the smell of urine. The homeless are there resting some asleep some awake.

Dell Computer has a kind of stall/tiny-store where you can use the Net if you pay.

And I've seen American express set up a temporary stand with fashionable and attractive young woman trying to lure people into get materialism.

Meanwhile - not so far away...

You don't see homeless sitting or sleeping in Ginza during the day. I bet they learn the hard way - to do that somewhere else. Underground the rules seem different.

I never saw (I moved back to the US) anyone beg like in Japan.

Mendicant priests ring a soft bell to gather donations.
They have a straw basket to make a donation into, a triangular straw hat and a small bell. You sometimes see them in Tokyo.

I've heard that sometimes someone is caught out - they are regular people wearing the garb to collect the cash.

[link] wikipedia - I never saw one sitting before...

Wikipedia is the greatest thing ever. It's often better then google - since it usually has just what you're looking for. Most things about Japan on the Net are worthless rubbish.

A guy before me said:

I disagree. I understand that the Channel sign is over-kill for some - but not for me.

Also I don't know how much time or space you had to maneuver in but I try to keep to shoot squares and rectangles from as parallel a position as I can.

I do agree with that guy that the Chanel sign is a bit distracting, but that was a busy crowded street, and there was no room to get closer without getting noticed. I have other frames but this is the only one without people in the way. I have redone it with the sign croped out might reload it.
